Upon approaching Tala’s deathbed, Moana was saddened to watch her grandmother die before her eyes and did not want to leave her side. However, after Tala urged her to leave Motunui, find Maui, and restore the Heart of Te Fiti, Moana decided to fulfill her grandmother’s dying wish and as she left to begin her journey, she saw Tala being reincarnated Moana into a giant manta ray. When they approach Motufetu’s location, Nalo unleashes his storm on them, with Maui being forced to double-back to take out some of the tornadoes going for Moana and her crew. However, Moana tells him to go for the island while they try to divert Nalo’s attention since he is after them due to his hatred of humanity.

They confront Te Kā, who Moana manages to outsmart in order to make it past Te Fiti’s barrier islands.

Eventually, Moana and her crew meet the Kakamora, who soon reveal that Nalo’s actions against Motufetu caused them to be disconnected from their home island as well. One of them, named Kotu, helps the crew destroy a giant monster clam that takes them to Matangi’s lair. While the crew find Maui, Moana meets Matangi, but learns that she isn’t happy serving Nalo and actually helps Moana escape her lair and reunite with Maui and her friends before sending them to where Nalo is.

Moana persuades him to comply when she claims that such an act will help Maui regain a positive reputation among mortals and be a hero again. Maui agrees to help, but not without his hook, which is said to be in the clutches of Tamatoa, a giant crab living in the monster realm. As they move forward, Moana observes as Maui is revealed to be a master scout. She asks him to teach her, and after he initially refuses, the ocean uses one of the Kakamora’s darts to paralyze the stubborn demigod, leaving him unable to navigate.
When Moana revealed the Heart of Te Fiti to Maui, she was amused to discover he was traumatized by the sight of it. She did not believe that anyone dangerous would appear if she showed the Heart around until the Kakamora revealed themselves before Moana and Maui. As they climb a mountain to reach the entrance to the underworld, Maui questions why the ocean chose Moana to save the world, though she doesn’t seem to know, herself. Despite her sudden feeling of self-doubt, Moana follows Maui into Lalotai, and eventually finds the fishhook. She distracts Tamatoa long enough for Maui to take back his hook, but the demigod finds that his shapeshifting abilities are out of whack.
After escaping the cave, the ocean sends Moana back on the sailboat to convince Maui. She shows him the heart and asks him to help her return it, but Maui backs away fearing that the heart is a trap for the person carrying it and that other creatures would kill to steal it for themselves. Along the way, she meets the mighty demigod Maui–together they cross the ocean on a fun-filled, action-packed voyage from Walt Disney Animation Studios. After sadly telling the ocean to bring the heart to someone else, Gramma Tala appears as a spiritual manta ray and encourages her to discover who she is based on what she has learned, what she has lived through, who she has met, and where she comes from. Moana proudly realizes who she has meant to be within herself and what defines her and swims down to retrieve the heart. Using her wayfinding skills, she returns to Te Kā and gets past Te Kā to return the heart.
When attacked by the Kakamora, Moana witnessed them kidnap Heihei after he foolishly swallowed the Heart of Te Fiti when it fell out of her necklace. Despite Maui refusing to help her and being outnumbered by the Kakamora, Moana was determined to rescue Heihei and retrieve the Heart. She fought and outsmarted the pirates, managing to rescue Heihei where the two managed to escape and jump back onto their boat, with Heihei spitting out the Heart upon hitting the canoe’s mast. After escaping from and defeating the Kakamora, Moana and Heihei continued their journey with Maui reluctantly accompanying them. When Moana left Motunui to find Maui and restore the Heart of Te Fiti, upon learning she had been chosen by the Ocean to do so, she was surprised to discover that Heihei had stowed away on her boat.
